The Ashes & Seeds – A Commemorative Performance commemorates the disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students in Iguala, Mexico, on the 11th anniversary of the event.

Memory is dispute. It should be obvious once the fake news has become a thing. Truth, as a construction, is rarely on the side of the oppressed. And because of this, we resist. We fight for the truths we still remember, we pass them on and hold on to them dearly, fiercely. We engrave them on our memories.

Ashes & Seeds asks how the event has survived and changed in our memories over 11 years of betrayal. It interrogates the specific memories of those who experienced the event from afar, through their mobile phones and social media.

The presentation is not intended to provide new information, but rather to be a place for collective naming, chaining and accountability. What happens in one place is never a single event.

The sound designer for Ashes & Seeds is Alejandro Montes de Oca.

The work is supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

Ashes & Seeds: A commemorative performance on muistomerkki 43 Ayotzinapan opiskelijan katoamiselle Igualassa, Meksikossa – tapahtumasta tulee kuluneeksi 11 vuotta.

Muisti on kiistanalainen asia. Sen pitäisi olla selvää aikana, jolloin valeuutiset ovat yleistyneet. Totuus, konstruktiona, on harvoin sorrettujen puolella, ja siksi vastustamme. Taistelemme totuuksien puolesta, jotka vielä muistamme, välitämme niitä eteenpäin ja pidämme niistä kiinni lujasti, kiihkeästi. Kaiverramme ne muistiimme.

Esitys kysyy, kuinka tietty tapahtuma on säilynyt ja muuttunut muistissamme 11 vuoden petoksen aikana. Se kysyy myös niiden ihmisten erityistä muistia, jotka ovat kokeneet tapahtuman kaukaa – matkapuhelintensa ja sosiaalisen median välityksellä.

Ashes & Seeds: A Commemorative Performance ei tarjoa uutta tietoa, vaan toimii tilana, jossa voidaan yhdessä nimetä, yhdistää ja palauttaa vastuuta. Yhden paikan tapahtumat eivät ole koskaan vain paikallisia tapahtumia.
